A SECOND CHANCE WORTH GRABBING
A SECOND CHANCE WORTH GRABBING
What happens after a huge fall? The most common answer is usually, "rise up and dust yourself as long as you still have a chance." Well, that is what I did after my unsatisfying matric results. I had to widen my eyes and search for a promising way forward.
I took a gap year, that is when I was introduced to real life. I got to understand why some young people get jobs after matric, why they become street vendors and why some end up being victims of drugs and alcohol. I can strongly confirm that was my hardest year. I was stranded and confused. The norm of my aunt giving me pocket money everyday for school was swallowed by my gap year, I had to work my way into having some change. Not to mention the part of watching my previous classmates pack their bags and updating their statuses every now and then as they were engulfed by huge buildings in different cities. For me, it was only a dream. I had one friend whom I spent my miserable year with. The difference between him and I was that, his matric results were not as bad as mine. We pushed, each day felt like a year and fortunately, we survived. We kept applying for the next academic year. My emails were as dry as the Sahara desert. Not a single reply dared to visit them. On the other hand, my friend was receiving numerous replies. It became clear for him that his days with me were numbered as he accepted one of the offers. I had to face the truth. As ugly as it appeared but it was not going anywhere, it kept whispering in my 'not ready listen' ears until it spoke louder and bolder saying, "Your current matric results will not take you anywhere." Facing it alone was not going to help me with anything, I needed to act on that.
You know when you are in matric for the first time, you always feel like everything is done but it is only the beginning. I had my, "I will never go back to school after this" mentality. I ignored the fact that my life was planned before I even came to existence and like an actor in a movie, I just had to follow the script. I went back to school as my friend went to university. I repeated matric in one of the schools that believed in second chances. Once again everything started to appear as possible as it was before. My dead dreams were given a chance to live again like Lazarus who was brought back to life after four days of his death. My second chance redirected me to my path of seeking success.
Second chances are not always rosy and sweet, they are a journey of trying to stay away from your previous mistakes and that brings new challenges that were not there before. What do you think my second was like? Stay here to find out.😉
